CS 1.6 first launch settings for beginners
Video settings
Go to Options > Video. The most important setting is resolution – CS 1.6 is a 4:3 game originally, but it runs on any resolution:
| Monitor type | Recommended resolution | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Old monitor / low-end PC | 800×600 or 1024×768 | Classic 4:3 ratio, maximum FPS on old hardware |
| Modern 1080p monitor | 1280×960 or 1920×1080 | 1280×960 gives sharp 4:3 image, 1080p fills the screen |
| 1440p or 4K monitor | 1280×960 or 1920×1080 | CS 1.6 does not benefit from higher resolutions – use 1080p max |
| Widescreen (16:9) | 1280×720 or 1920×1080 | Image will be stretched – many players prefer black bars with 4:3 |
Other important video settings:
- Renderer: OpenGL – best performance on all hardware
- Color quality: 32-bit
- V-Sync: off – adds input delay and caps FPS
After setting resolution, open console with ~ and set FPS cap – this is critical for consistent gameplay:
fps_max 100
fps_modem 0
On Non-Steam you may need to type developer 1 first before fps_max takes effect. Add both lines to cstrike/userconfig.cfg to apply automatically every time you launch.
Enable console
The console is essential in CS 1.6 – you need it for commands, connecting to servers and applying settings. Enable it in Options > Keyboard > Advanced > Enable developer console. Then press ~ (tilde key, top left under Escape) to open it.
Audio settings
Go to Options > Audio. Keep effects volume high – footsteps, reload clicks and grenade sounds are critical game information in CS 1.6. Recommended starting point: Music 20%, Effects 80%, overall volume comfortable for your headset or speakers.
Mouse sensitivity
Go to Options > Keyboard & Mouse. Sensitivity depends on your mouse DPI setting:
| Mouse DPI | Recommended in-game sensitivity | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 400 DPI | 2.0 – 3.5 | Low DPI requires higher in-game value |
| 800 DPI | 1.5 – 2.5 | Most common combination |
| 1600 DPI | 0.8 – 1.5 | High DPI needs lower in-game value |
| Unknown DPI | 2.0 | Start here and adjust after a few games |
Lower sensitivity = better precision for aiming but requires more physical mouse movement. Most experienced CS 1.6 players use 800 DPI at 1.5-2.0 in-game sensitivity. Enable raw input in console for consistent mouse response:
m_rawinput 1
Counter-Strike 1.6 controls – keyboard and mouse reference
| Key | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| W A S D | Move | Standard FPS movement |
| Spacebar | Jump | Jump over obstacles |
| Ctrl | Crouch | Improves accuracy, reduces hitbox |
| Shift | Walk slowly | Silent movement – enemies cannot hear you |
| Left Mouse | Shoot | Primary fire |
| Right Mouse | Aim / secondary | Scope on snipers, shield deploy on CT |
| R | Reload | Reload current weapon |

CS 1.6 buy menu and economy basics
At the start of each round you have a few seconds to buy weapons and equipment. Press B to open the buy menu. You can only buy within the first few seconds of the round and only while standing in your spawn area.
What to buy as a beginner
| Item | Buy path | Why buy it |
|---|---|---|
| Kevlar vest + helmet | B > 6 > 1 | Reduces damage from bullets and headshots. Buy every round if you can afford it. Costs $1000. |
| AK-47 (T) | B > 4 > 2 | Most reliable Terrorist rifle. One headshot kills at any range. Costs $2500. |
| M4A1 (CT) | B > 4 > 3 | Standard CT rifle. Silenced by default. Costs $3100. |
| Desert Eagle | B > 2 > 4 | Powerful pistol for eco rounds when you cannot afford a rifle. Costs $650. |
| HE Grenade | B > 8 > 1 | Does area damage – useful for clearing corners. Costs $300. |
| Flashbang | B > 8 > 2 | Blinds enemies temporarily. Throw before entering a room. Costs $200. |
| Smoke grenade | B > 8 > 4 | Blocks vision – use to cross open areas or delay pushes. Costs $300. |
| Defuse kit (CT only) | B > 6 > 2 | Halves defuse time from 10 to 5 seconds. Always buy as CT. Costs $200. |
Economy – when to save and when to buy
CS 1.6 has an economy system – you earn money for kills, round wins and objectives. Managing money is as important as aim:
- Full buy – rifle + armor + grenades. Do this when you have $3500+ (T) or $4000+ (CT)
- Eco round – buy nothing or just a pistol when you have under $2000. Save money for the next round so the whole team can full buy together
- Force buy – spend everything even with low money. Do this when losing several rounds in a row and need a win
- Always buy as a team – if your teammates are saving, you should too. One player with a rifle cannot win alone
CS 1.6 gameplay basics – T, CT and beginner tips
Terrorists (T) – bomb team
Goal on bomb defusal maps (de_): plant the C4 bomb at bombsite A or B and prevent defuse. One T player carries the bomb automatically each round. Plant by standing on the bombsite and holding left mouse button.
- Push bomb sites as a team – split pushes divide CT attention
- Use smoke grenades to block CT sightlines before pushing
- Flashbang before entering a site to blind defenders
- After planting – hold positions around the planted bomb, do not chase kills
Goal on hostage rescue maps (cs_): eliminate all CTs or survive until time runs out. Terrorists defend the hostages.
Counter-Terrorists (CT) – defend and defuse
Goal on bomb defusal maps (de_): prevent bomb plant or defuse the C4 before it explodes. Buy a defuse kit from the B menu – it halves defuse time from 10 to 5 seconds.
- Hold bomb sites – one CT at A, one at B as minimum
- Listen for footsteps to predict where T team is pushing
- Rotate to the other site when your team calls the push
- If bomb is planted – clear the site first, then defuse
Goal on hostage rescue maps (cs_): rescue all hostages and bring them to the rescue zone. Hostages follow you when you stand near them and press E.
General tips for new CS 1.6 players
| Tip | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Stand still when shooting | Moving while shooting spreads bullets randomly – stop to aim accurately |
| Tap fire instead of holding trigger | Continuous fire increases recoil – single shots or short bursts are more accurate |
| Always buy armor | Armor absorbs significant damage – skip it only if saving money intentionally |
| Crouch when shooting at distance | Crouching reduces bullet spread on most weapons |
| Use Shift to walk near enemies | Running makes noise audible to nearby enemies |
| Reload between fights not during | Reloading takes 2-3 seconds – do it before entering a new area |
| Watch the radar | Red dots show known enemy positions – check it constantly |
| Use team chat (U) for calls | Calling enemy positions helps your team even if you die |
