Streaming counter-strike 1.6 with OBS differs from modern games – CS 1.6 runs on the GoldSrc engine which needs specific capture settings that Game Capture in OBS does not support reliably. Whether you want a counter-strike 1.6 live stream on Twitch or YouTube, start with the OBS capture and settings sections below, then jump to your platform.

Requirements for streaming counter-strike 1.6
CS 1.6 is very lightweight but OBS encoding adds CPU and upload load. Minimum for a stable cs 1.6 stream:
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Intel i3 / AMD Ryzen 3 | Intel i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 – encoding is CPU intensive |
| RAM | 4GB | 8GB – CS 1.6 uses very little but OBS needs memory for encoding |
| GPU | Any with display output | NVIDIA GTX 1050+ for NVENC encoding which reduces CPU load significantly |
| Upload speed | 3 Mbps | 6-10 Mbps for 720p60 or 1080p30 without buffering |
| Connection | Wi-Fi | Wired Ethernet – Wi-Fi causes stream drops and instability |
See the full cs 1.6 system requirements if unsure whether your PC can run the game.

Capture counter-strike 1.6 in OBS – black screen fix
Standard Game Capture in OBS is visible in the Sources list but often shows a black screen with CS 1.6 because GoldSrc engine doesn’t support the DirectX hooks OBS uses for Game Capture. Use Window Capture or Display Capture instead.
Window Capture – recommended for cs 1.6 OBS
- Launch Counter-Strike 1.6 in windowed mode first – add
-windowto your launch options, or go to Options → Video → Display Mode → Windowed - In OBS click + under Sources at the bottom of the screen
- From the list select Window Capture
- Click Create new, name it “CS 1.6” and click OK
- In the Window dropdown select [hl.exe]: Counter-Strike 1.6 or similar
- Leave other settings at default and click OK
- CS 1.6 should appear in the OBS preview – resize it to fill the canvas if needed by right-clicking → Transform → Fit to Screen
Display Capture – if Window Capture shows black screen
- In OBS click + under Sources
- From the list select Display Capture
- Select your monitor and click OK
- This captures your entire screen including CS 1.6 – crop to the game window if needed: right-click the source → Filters → Crop/Pad
Still black screen? Right-click OBS in the taskbar → Run as administrator. Also check that CS 1.6 is actually in windowed mode – fullscreen GoldSrc games fail to capture in Window Capture mode.
Set up audio in OBS for cs 1.6 streaming
Go to OBS → Settings → Audio and configure:
| Setting | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sample Rate | 48 kHz | Required by Twitch, YouTube and Kick – 44100 Hz causes audio sync issues on some platforms |
| Channels | Stereo | Standard for streaming |
| Desktop Audio | Your speakers or headphones | This captures CS 1.6 game sounds |
| Mic/Auxiliary Audio | Your microphone | Select your mic from the dropdown – set to Disabled if not streaming with mic |
In the OBS main window check the Audio Mixer at the bottom. Both Desktop Audio and Mic should show green bars when active. If Desktop Audio shows no activity while CS 1.6 is running – right-click Desktop Audio in the mixer → Properties and select the correct audio output device.
OBS output and video settings for cs 1.6
Go to OBS → Settings → Output and set to Advanced mode:

| Rate Control | CBR | Constant bitrate – required by all major streaming platforms |
| Bitrate | 3000-4500 Kbps | 3000 for 720p30, 4500 for 720p60 or 1080p30 |
| Keyframe Interval | 2 | Required by Twitch, YouTube and Kick |
| Preset | Quality (NVENC) or veryfast (x264) | veryfast keeps CPU usage low enough for CS 1.6 to run smoothly |
| Audio Bitrate | 160 Kbps | Good quality without wasting upload bandwidth |
Go to Settings → Video:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Base Resolution | 1920×1080 or your monitor resolution |

Counter-strike 1.6 streaming tips
- FPS cap – set
fps_max 100in CS 1.6 console. Uncapped FPS causes frame time variance that makes the stream choppy. See the cs 1.6 FPS optimization guide - Windowed mode – streaming CS 1.6 in fullscreen causes black screen in OBS on most systems. Always use windowed mode for cs 1.6 OBS capture
- Separate audio tracks – in OBS Audio settings route game audio and mic to separate tracks so you can edit them independently in VODs
- Stream title keywords – include “CS 1.6”, “Counter-Strike 1.6” and “classic CS” in your stream title so viewers searching for CS 1.6 content can find you
- Bitrate – CS 1.6 has fast movement and sharp textures. Use at least 3500 Kbps to avoid compression artifacts during intense rounds
- Dropped frames – if OBS shows dropped frames, lower the bitrate by 500 Kbps at a time until drops stop. Or switch encoder from x264 to NVENC if you have an NVIDIA GPU
