CS 1.6 Bots Not Working – Counter-Strike 1.6 Bot Fix

Last updated: August 2, 2026

CS 1.6 bots not spawning is a common problem for players who want to play Counter-Strike 1.6 offline – against computer-controlled players without an internet connection.

These fixes are for regular players wanting to play singleplayer or LAN with bots, not for server administrators.

Whether you can’t add bots in cs 1.6, bot_add returns unknown command, bots don’t appear after you add them, or you’re getting “All bot profiles at this difficulty level are in use” – all cases are covered below. If you don’t have the game yet, download Counter-Strike 1.6 from our portal – it comes with bots already included.

Steam – CS 1.6 25th Anniversary Update broke bots

If you’re on Steam and cs 1.6 bots stopped working after an update, this is a known bug introduced by the 25th Anniversary Update in November 2023. The update broke bot spawning and the “add bot” menu – you may see “All bot profiles at this difficulty level are in use” or the Settings tab crashes the game. The fix:

  1. Uninstall Counter-Strike 1.6 from Steam completely
  2. Delete the remaining folder manually: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\
  3. Reinstall from Steam
  4. Download CS 1.6 25th Anniversary Bots fix pack: CS1.6 25th Anniversary Bots fix (22.5MB)
  5. Extract the ZIP – copy the cstrike, czero, and valve folders into your CS 1.6 installation folder and click Replace the files in the destination
  6. Launch the game and create a New Game – bots should now spawn correctly

Important: after applying this fix, do not click Verify integrity of game files in Steam – it will overwrite the patched files and break bots again. If you accidentally verified, simply copy the three folders from the ZIP again.

Alternatively, download CS 1.6 from our portal – the Non-Steam version is not affected by this bug and includes working bots out of the box.

CS 1.6 bot commands not working – console fix

If bot_add returns “Unknown command” or cs 1.6 bots won’t spawn after typing it, the console may not be enabled or the bot system isn’t active. You may also see the error “All bot profiles at this difficulty level are in use” – this means bot_quota is set to 0 or bot_join_after_player is blocking them. Open the console with ~ and try these commands in order:

bot_quota 5
bot_join_after_player 0
bot_add t
bot_add ct
Command What it does
bot_quota [number] Sets how many bots should be in the game – set this first
bot_join_after_player 0 Allows bots to join even without a human player – important for singleplayer
bot_add Adds one bot to whichever team has fewer players
bot_add t Adds one bot to Terrorists
bot_add ct Adds one bot to Counter-Terrorists
bot_difficulty [0-3] Sets bot difficulty – 0 Easy, 1 Normal, 2 Hard, 3 Expert
bot_kick Removes all bots from the game

If bot_add returns “Unknown command” – the bot system is not installed. See the next section.

If the console won’t open, enable it first: Options → Keyboard → Advanced → Enable Developer Console, then press ~.

CS 1.6 bots not installed – Non-Steam version

Counter-Strike 1.6 has no bots by default – bots were never part of the original CS 1.6, they were added later through mods. If bot_add gives “Unknown command”, the bot system is simply not installed. This is the most common reason players can’t add bots in cs 1.6.

The two main bot systems for cs 1.6 are:

Bot system Type Use case
Z-Bot Standalone – loads through Metamod Simplest option for offline and LAN play on Windows – recommended for most players
Podbot (YaPB) Metamod plugin More advanced alternative – works offline and on servers, also has Linux support

For most players wanting to play cs 1.6 offline with bots, Z-Bot is the easiest to set up. See the cs 1.6 Z-Bot installation guide for full setup instructions.

Set cs 1.6 bots automatically via config

To avoid typing bot commands every session, add them to cstrike\listenserver.cfg – this file runs automatically when you start a local game:

bot_quota 9
bot_difficulty 1
bot_join_after_player 0
bot_add t
bot_add ct

Save the file and the bots will join automatically every time you start a New Game.

CS 1.6 bots not spawning on custom maps

Bots in Counter-Strike 1.6 use navigation mesh files (.nav) to move around maps. Official maps have these files included. Custom maps often don’t, which causes bots to appear on the scoreboard but not spawn or move.

Two options for custom maps:

  • Download a .nav file for the map if one exists – place it in cstrike\maps\ alongside the .bsp file
  • Generate a nav file in-game: open console and type bot_nav_analyze – this takes several minutes depending on map size. Save with bot_nav_save
