CS 1.6 Won’t Launch After Video Settings Change – Fix

CS 1.6 not opening after changing video settings is one of the most common launch problems in Counter-Strike 1.6. The game saved a resolution or renderer that your system can’t handle – and now it crashes before reaching the main menu. Whether you changed the renderer from OpenGL to Software, set an unsupported resolution, or switched to widescreen – the fix is the same: reset those settings from outside the game. Launch cs 1.6 in Safe Mode after video settings crash

Safe Mode resets all cs 1.6 video settings to defaults on launch without touching any files. It’s the fastest fix when cs 1.6 can’t start after a video settings change and works for both Steam and Non-Steam.

Steam:

1. Open Steam → right-click Counter-Strike 1.6 → Properties
2. Click Set Launch Options
3. Type -safe and click OK
4. Launch the game – it will start with default video settings
5. Once inside, go to Options → Video and set your preferred settings correctly
6. Remove -safe from launch options after the game works again

Non-Steam:

1. Right-click your CS 1.6 shortcut → Properties
2. In the Target field, add -safe at the end – e.g. "C:\Games\Counter-Strike 1.6\hl.exe" -safe
3. Launch and set correct settings, then remove -safe from the shortcut

Reset cs 1.6 video settings via launch options

If -safe alone doesn’t fix the cs 1.6 launch problem after video settings change, add these launch options to force a working renderer and window mode:

Launch option	What it does
-autoconfig	Automatically resets all settings including video to safe defaults – simplest one-command fix
-gl	Forces OpenGL renderer – the most stable option for cs 1.6
-windowed	Forces windowed mode – bypasses fullscreen resolution issues
-w 800 -h 600	Forces 800×600 resolution – safe fallback that works on any monitor
-noborder	Removes window border – use with -windowed for borderless window

Add them to Steam launch options or your Non-Steam shortcut Target field. Example that fixes most cases:

-gl -windowed -w 800 -h 600

Once the game launches, go to Options → Video and set your preferred settings, then remove these launch options.

Delete or reset counter-strike 1.6 config.cfg

The config.cfg file stores all your cs 1.6 video settings including resolution and renderer. Deleting it resets everything to defaults and usually fixes counter-strike 1.6 not launching after a bad settings change.

Steam:

1. Open Steam → right-click Counter-Strike 1.6 → Properties → Local Files → Browse Local Files
2. Open the cstrike folder
3. Delete config.cfg
4. Launch the game – a fresh config will be generated automatically

Non-Steam:

1. Go to your CS 1.6 installation folder – typically C:\Games\Counter-Strike 1.6\cstrike\
2. Delete config.cfg
3. Launch the game

If you want to keep your other settings (keybinds, crosshair) instead of deleting the whole file, open config.cfg with Notepad and find and delete only these lines:

gl_mode
width
height
_vid_default_mode

Delete cs 1.6 video.cfg

Some cs 1.6 installations store video settings in a separate video.cfg file. Delete it alongside or instead of config.cfg:

1. Go to cstrike\ folder
2. Delete video.cfg if it exists
3. Launch the game

Verify counter-strike 1.6 game files (Steam)

If the cs 1.6 video settings crash persists after resetting configs, the game files may be corrupted:

1. Open Steam → right-click Counter-Strike 1.6 → Properties
2. Go to Installed Files tab
3. Click Verify integrity of game files
4. Steam will redownload any missing or corrupted files
5. Launch the game after verification completes

Reinstall counter-strike 1.6

If none of the above fixes counter-strike 1.6 not launching after video settings change, a full reinstall is the most reliable solution:

Steam:

1. Right-click Counter-Strike 1.6 in Steam → Manage → Uninstall
2. Delete the remaining folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\
3. Reinstall from Steam

Non-Steam:

1. Delete your CS 1.6 installation folder completely
2. Download Counter-Strike 1.6 fresh from our portal
3. Install to a folder outside Program Files – e.g. C:\Games\Counter-Strike 1.6\ – to avoid Windows permission conflicts
