The download contains both files packaged as a .zip archive, with the userconfig.cfg pre-set with optimized network rates.

How to install the default CS 1.6 config.cfg and userconfig.cfg

  1. Click the download button above and save the .zip file
  2. Extract the archive – you will find two files: config.cfg and userconfig.cfg
  3. Navigate to your Counter-Strike 1.6 cstrike folder:
Version Default path
Steam C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\cstrike\
Non-Steam C:\Games\Counter-Strike 1.6\cstrike\ (or wherever you installed it)
  1. Copy both config.cfg and userconfig.cfg into the cstrike folder. Click Yes if asked to replace existing files.
  2. Launch CS 1.6 – your settings are now restored to the default configuration

Alternatively, load it without replacing your existing files by opening console with ~ and typing exec config.cfg.

What is in config.cfg

The default CS 1.6 config.cfg is the main configuration file stored in the cstrike folder. It contains all standard in-game settings – key bindings, sensitivity 3.0, a green static crosshair, fps_max 101, and competitive network rates (cl_cmdrate/cl_updaterate 101). The game overwrites this file every time you exit, which is why permanent custom settings belong in userconfig.cfg instead. The last line, exec userconfig.cfg, loads your personal settings on top of this file every session.

What is in userconfig.cfg and how it works

The CS 1.6 userconfig.cfg is your personal settings file. Unlike config.cfg, which the game rewrites on every exit, userconfig.cfg is never touched automatically – it only runs when called by the exec userconfig.cfg line at the bottom of config.cfg. This makes it the correct place for any permanent custom settings – network rates, sensitivity, crosshair color, or key binds.

The userconfig.cfg included in this download sets optimized network rates – cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate at 101, rate at 25000, right-handed weapon view, and a slightly higher interp value for smoother hit registration on most servers.

Any setting added to userconfig.cfg loads automatically every session and overrides whatever config.cfg sets. To add your own settings, open the file in Notepad, add commands on new lines, save, and relaunch CS 1.6.

How to protect your CS 1.6 config from being overwritten by servers

Some servers can send commands that modify your counter-strike 1.6 config settings during a session. To prevent this permanently, set config.cfg to Read-Only after placing this default config in the cstrike folder:

  1. Navigate to your cstrike folder
  2. Right-click config.cfg and select Properties
  3. Check Read-only and click Apply

With Read-only enabled, no server or game session can modify the file. Your custom settings in userconfig.cfg still load on every launch. For more detail on saving settings permanently, see the CS 1.6 settings save guide. If your config was corrupted or deleted, see the corrupted files fix guide.
