Counter-Strike 1.6 Main Menu – Every Option Explained
Last updated: August 2, 2026
The Counter-Strike 1.6 main menu is the first thing you see after launching the game. It looks simple but contains everything needed to start a game, connect to a server, adjust settings, and access the console. Every option in the cs 1.6 game menu is covered below – what it does and where to find specific settings. If you don’t have the game yet, download Counter-Strike 1.6 from our portal.
New Game – cs 1.6 offline and LAN play
New Game opens a local server on your machine – you are both the host and a player. This is how you play cs 1.6 offline with bots or over LAN with friends on the same network. When you click New Game you get a map selection screen where you can pick the map, set the max player count, and configure round settings before starting.
To add bots after starting, open the console with ~ and type bot_add t or bot_add ct. Press H in-game to open the bot command menu.
Find Servers – cs 1.6 server browser
Find Servers opens the cs 1.6 server browser – the main way to find and join online servers. The browser has four tabs:
| Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Internet | All public cs 1.6 servers worldwide – refresh to get the current list |
| LAN | Servers running on your local network – for LAN parties or home network games |
| Favorites | Servers you’ve saved – right-click any server and select Add to Favorites |
| History | Servers you’ve recently connected to |
In the Internet tab you can filter by game type, number of players, ping, and whether the server has free slots. Right-click any server and choose Connect to join, or View server info to see the full player list and map rotation before joining. The History tab keeps a list of the last servers you connected to – fastest way to rejoin without searching again. You can also connect directly via console:
connect 123.456.78.9:27015
Port 27015 is the default cs 1.6 server port. If the server browser shows no servers or loads slowly, the master server may be down or your firewall may be blocking UDP traffic. See our guide on fixing cs 1.6 server connection issues.
Options – counter-strike 1.6 settings menu
The cs 1.6 Options menu is split into five tabs:
| Tab | What you can change | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Rebind every action to a different key | Competitive players often rebind grenades, radio commands, and buy shortcuts here |
| Mouse | Sensitivity, reverse mouse, mouse filter | For competitive play disable Mouse Filter and set m_rawinput 1 via console – not available in this menu directly |
| Audio | Master volume, sound quality (Low/Medium/High), enable/disable sound | Set quality to High – Low quality sometimes causes crackling on modern hardware |
| Video | Resolution, colour depth, display mode (windowed/fullscreen), renderer (OpenGL/Software/Direct3D) | Most players use OpenGL for best performance. See our cs 1.6 video settings guide |
| Multiplayer | Player name, player model, crosshair style/colour/size, spray logo, HUD colour | The name set here appears on all servers. Servers with cl_minmodels 1 override player model for all players |
Console – counter-strike 1.6 advanced settings
The cs 1.6 console is a command-line interface that gives access to every game setting not available in the Options menu. Press ~ (tilde) in-game to open it. If the console doesn’t open, enable it first:
- Go to Options → Keyboard tab
- Check Enable developer console
- Press
~to open
Through the console you can set network rates, FPS cap, crosshair settings, bind keys, add bots, and run cfg files. See our full cs 1.6 console commands list for all available commands.
Quit
Exits Counter-Strike 1.6 and returns to the desktop. You can also quit via the console with the command quit.
CS 1.6 in-game menu (Escape)
Pressing Escape while in a game opens a separate in-game menu – different from the main menu. It has four options:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Resume Game | Closes the menu and returns you to the game |
| Disconnect | Leaves the current server and returns to the main menu |
| Player List | Shows all players currently on the server with their Steam IDs – useful for admins |
| Options | Opens the same Options menu accessible from the main menu |
