CS 1.6 Stuck on Ladder Fix – Counter-Strike 1.6 Ladder Bug

CS 1.6 stuck on ladder – cannot climb, get stuck mid-way, cs 1.6 cant go up ladder, or counter-strike 1.6 ladder not working at all. Two fixable causes: FPS too high or holding Duck while climbing. If you need a clean install, download Counter-Strike 1.6 free.

FPS too high – cs 1.6 ladder glitch fix

Above 300 FPS the GoldSrc engine physics break – cs 1.6 ladder not working and climbing stops completely. This is the most common cause of cs 1.6 player getting stuck on ladder.

Fix: open the console with ~ and type:

fps_max 100

Add this line to cstrike\userconfig.cfg so it applies every time you launch the game. Check your current FPS with net_graph 1 – the first number shown is FPS. If it was above 300 before – this fix will solve the ladder problem immediately.

Holding Duck – cs 1.6 cannot climb ladder fix

Holding Ctrl (Duck) while trying to climb up causes cs 1.6 stuck on ladder – you press W to go up but nothing happens. This is a known GoldSrc engine bug.

Fix:

1. Release Ctrl completely before approaching a ladder
2. Press W to climb up – do not hold Ctrl at the same time
3. If already stuck on a ladder – release Ctrl, then press S to move down slightly, then W again without Ctrl

Duck while moving down a ladder works fine – the bug only affects climbing up while crouched.

Counter-strike 1.6 ladder bug on specific map

If climbing works on de_dust2, de_inferno, de_nuke and other standard maps but fails on one specific map – the map itself has a broken ladder brush. This is a map design problem, not a game setting.

Fix: switch to a different server running standard official maps, or ask the server admin to replace the broken map with a fixed version.
